·         September 21, 2005 - All the pages about Nicolas Peltier have been updated by Benoit Pelletier Shoja following his lastest dicovery. Also, you'll be able to read about the new plaque and monument to Nicolas and Jeanne's memory.

·         May 10, 2005 - New products are now available at the Pelletier Family Association Boutique: Pen; Pen and Mechanical Pencil Set; Flared Beer Glass (11 ½ ounces); New colors for t-shirts (light blue and burgundy); New color for polo shirts (light blue); New adult size (small); child's t-shirt (light blue). ·         August 16, 2004 - The 18th Pelletier Family Reunion has already come and gone. The next union will take place August 6 and 7, 2005, in Amqui, on the Gaspé Peninsula. Details will be available this autumn on the Association website and in forcoming issues of La Pelleterie.

Asssociation secretary Marcelle Pelletier-Ouellet and her husband, Guy Ouellet have volunteered to take over for Luc P. Pelletier as editors of La Pelleterie.

At the Association’s recent general assembly, it was decided that Laure Gauthier, m.g.a., Claude E. Pelletier, m.g.a., and Luc P. Pelletier all be named honorary members.

At the same time, the assembly read a letter from Jacqueline Pelletier, who lives at La Cristerie, ancestral home of Guillaume Pelletier, who wrote to inform us that her husband, André Gaudet, had died last July 24. Funeral services took place in Bresolettes, July 28.
 

·         For quite some time now we are collecting in our data bank pictures of Pelletier ancestors. So far we have collected over 700 of them. Participate and send your scanned pictures (with as much detail as possible, 300DPI) via emails or you can also send your photocopied documents via our regular mail. Please, unless you have no choice, we prefer not to handle original print who must remain your families heritage.

The name PELLETIER comes from the Latin pellis, which means furrier, one who buys, sells, or prepares furs or pelts, or one in the fur trade. The ancient Greeks and Romans regarded the wearing of furs as barbaric, but by the fifth century, the taste for rare and valuable fur-lined coats had taken the West by storm. In France, for in-stance, Charlemagne used to wear a doublet lined with otter skins during the winter. Moreover, by 1346, the fur merchants of Paris had their own special status and privi-leges.

It comes as no surprise, therefore, that these many tradesmen adopted and passed along the Pelletier family name.

The Pelletier Family Association website offers its readers a summary of the lives and times of the Pelletiers who came to settle in New France. Many of the descendants of these first pioneers still bear the Pelletier name, while other lines disappeared after only a few generations.

Au fil de vos recherches généalogiques, il est fort possible de rencontrer diverses façons d'écrire le nom PELLETIER ou encore de constater diverses variations sur le même thème survenues au gré des migrations ou au gré des mariages.

·         Antaya, concernent les descendants du fils de Nicolas Peltier, François, qui avait épousé une amérindienne.

·         Pelkey, Pelky ou Pelkie, adaptation à l'américaine du nom Pelletier.

·         Peltier, usage que l'on rencontre majoritairement aujourd'hui chez les Pelletier anglophones d'Amérique. On le retrouve également en France.

·         Peletier, avec un seul « L », forme rare qui se recontre en Angleterre particulièrement.

·         Le Pelletier, Lepelletier, Le Peltier & Lepeltier, de façon générale on retrouve ces usages en France.

·         Peleiteiro, se retrouve uniquement au Portugal.
 

Voici d'autres variations que nous n'avons pu retrouver et vérifier, peut-être avez-vous la chance de nous en apporter les preuves de leurs existences ; Pelletiers, Pelletiere, Pelletierre, le Pelletiere, Pellettieri, Peltiers, Peltiere, Peltierre, Pellettier, Pellettiere et Peltear.
